Español 1: Welcome and general syllabus

¡Bienvenido/a a la clase de español 1!  Welcome!

I am so glad you have chosen to take Spanish.  It is a wonderful, rich language with a lot of awesome culture!  You will learn a lot this year about the language and the countries where it is spoken, as well as the customs and cultural practices of the people.

So...let's get started!

For Spanish 1 this year we will use a blend of materials/books:  Así se dice, Entre Culturas, and Realidades are the three textbooks we will use.  You will receive tangible copies of some of the materials, others will be offered online, and the rest will go into your composition notebook.

Materials you need:  your laptop (charged and ready to use, although there will be many days we will not use it) ; a composition notebook- maybe 2!;   pencils, pens, dry-erase markers and an eraser (a clean sock will do!); colored pencils OR crayons; a glue stick; a positive attitude and the desire to learn about other people.

What I will provide:  all the information and practice needed to become proficient at the mid-novice level- the level you should attain in a first level class!

Grading policies for this class- you do not have tests in this class- you have assessments to show proficiency / growth. The assessments are graded with rubrics and are placed into the following categories:

Reading:  20% of your overall grade in the class

Listening:  20% of your overall grade in the class

Writing:   25%  (10% formative and 15% summative)

Speaking 25%   (10% formative and 15% summative)

Class participation:  10%  (this includes the daily speaking participation as well as integrated classroom activities)

Classroom "normas"  (rules and expectations)

  • You will come to class prepared (materials ready, homework completed, rested, ready to speak)
  • You will respect the work of others- no one is perfect, and if this class seems too easy for you, I will move you to level 2!
  • You will listen to others and respond appropriately
  • You will be kind
  • You will not use your phone in class unless it is part of the activity  (phone use when not appropriate will result in a zero)
  • You will succeed as long as you apply your best efforts
  • You will NOT use Google Translate or other outside sources (this includes other people) to do YOUR work.  I do NOT tolerate cheating, and there will be no second chances. Be a decent and honest human being!
  • Until things change, you will wear your face mask appropriately, covering your mouth and nose.  Chin diapers are a no-no!

I look forward to meeting you and working with you this year!   Hasta el 23 de agosto- ¡nos vemos entonces!
